Description

This is a  book of the Jodo Wasan from the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism. Hymns of praise by the founder of
Shinran Buddhism
The three texts are:
"Shomatsu Wasan" (
正像末和讃)
written around 1258. "Jodo Wasan" (
浄土和讃)
and "Koso Wasan" (
高僧和讃)
both written around 1248. All together called "Sanjo Wasan"
The binding is very good. and the pages are in very good condition. There is no insect damage (a common problem with older Japanese books made with handmade washi paper.)
Photo # 5 shows the written date "Anei 4" (The fourth year of Anei AKA: 1775)
And in the 60 year cycle that was used in Japan and China up to the late 1800's (Five elements and the twelve zodiac animals combined) This was printed in a "Wood / Goat" year.
The wood lacquered storage box comes with it.  The box was meant to protect the book and the lacquer has taken some damage with small nicks and marks.
It's 8 3/4 x 7 x 3 1/2 inches (22 x 18 x 9 cm)
