    Description

    GJPaw
Auctions is pleased to offer a stunningly beautiful antique Chinese Qing dynasty porcelain Ink Stone, with lid.
The invention and development of China's traditional culture and art are closely related to the "Four Treasures of the Study"
    ,
a term used in Chinese and other East Asian calligraphic traditions.
The ink stone, together with the brush, ink stick and paper, are the four writing implements traditionally known as the Four Treasures of the Study (i.e. writing brush, ink, ink stone, and paper).
    The "
    study
" in this context taken to mean a scholar's or an artist's studio, or library.
The use of brush dates back to 4000-5000 years ago in China; ink came into being 3000 years ago; the paper was invented in the Eastern Han Dynasty; and the ink stone was invented in the Spring and Autumn Period. An ink stone is a mortar for the grinding and containment of ink.
A good ink stone is as important as the quality of the ink, as it will affect the quality and texture of the ink that is ground upon it.
Ink stones are made from many types of stone, as well as porcelain and wood. This superb lidded example is made from porcelain.
It is beautifully proportioned and measures 5.5 inches in width by 6.5 inches in depth by 2.0 inches in height (13.9 cm by 16.5 cm by 5.08 cm). It shows wear consistent with use, but generally is in very good condition.
The bottom shows a Qing dynasty
    zhuanshu
"archaic seal" from the Daoguang reign (1821-1850). This would make an exceptionally fine addition to any collection of scholar's or calligraphy objects and is guaranteed authentic.
