Condition

A great looking antique SEWING MACHINE OIL bottle.   These could be a category of collecting in themselves as there are a ton of different brands out there but almost all of them used this same paneled rectangular shaped bottle.   The Larkin Company of old manufactured
everything from perfume to household cleaners - from medicine to furniture, and everything in between, back in the 1800's. As a result of such a diversity of things, there are a lot of collectors who collect the bottles, tins, and furniture that has been left behind.  This embossed bottle here is nice as the MACHINE OIL embossing takes the guess work out of what was in it and what kind of Larkin product this bottle contained.  Though this style of bottle is pretty distinctively a sewing machine oil bottle, the oil was also advertised for other things as well, even gun oil and a general household oil.
The indented panels and embossing; 3 sides of it, make this bottle stand out, not to mention the color.
You hear about antique bottles turning purple, it is the result of having manganese in the glass.  Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of molten liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass.   Then it was blown into a mold to create a vessel.   But once exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese starts to oxidize and the vessel slowly turns a pronounced lavender or amethyst color.   The end result is what collectors refer to as SCA (Sun Colored Amethyst) glass.   The longer it is in the sun the purpler it becomes.  This bottle has been exposed to a high heat/light source to enrich the purple color that would naturally occur if exposed to sun light for a prolonged period of time.   And here's the best part ... in this deep purple color, you look, not through the 'Sewing Machine Oil' embossing, but right AT the 'Sewing Machine Oil' embossing.  With a clear glass bottle you look through it, and the embossing reflects what ever colors and patterns are captured in the background.   Yet this deep-amethyst color now accentuates the embossing and makes every word jump right out at you, and you can see it like never before!
With few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 will turn sun-colored-amethyst and not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make it a great looking vessel, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique.  The LARKIN Machine Oil bottles are
