This is a stunning stick spatter sponge stencil ware
charger tray or platter originally part of a complete miniature children's
dinner set.
The platter measures 5-1/2 inches across,
playfully decorated with a pair of
impressionistic ra
bbits against a cross-hatched picket fence, applied in a two-color motif of red and black on a creamy faience or earthenware background. The pattern name is "LAPINS" or "RABBITS".
The
plate
is marked with impressed I on the bottom. It was made by Choisy le Roi, a faiencerie in Luneville region of France, dates to c. 1905. Similar in appearance and manufacture to the earthenware sets made in the Staffordshire region of English.
The
tray
is in great condition with no chips, cracks or repairs.Light overall crazing consistent with age.
Not fine pottery and not intended to...made for children and considered disposable.
Minor manufacturing imperfections, including shadowing and smudges of the stencil on the plate, original to the making.
Children's sponge ware or stencil ware of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. The naive rabbit is simple and striking.
