Child's Pochoir Stencil Print Miniature DishGIRAFFE
Choisy le Roi HBCM Luneville France c1920
This is a stunning stick spatter pochoir stencil ware dish or plate, originally part of a complete miniature children's dinner service. The tiny plate measures 4 inches in diameter.
The plate is playfully decorated with a stencil of a stylized giraffe applied in a two-color motif of bright green brown and black on a creamy faience earthenware blank.
The plate is unmarked except for an unreadable impressed numeral on back. Made by Choisy le Roi, a faiencerie in Luneville region of France. It dates to c. 1920. Similar in appearance and manufacture to the earthenware sets made in the Staffordshire region of English.
The piece is in very good overall condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Minor transfer irregularities original to the making, as shown. Not fine pottery and not intended to be. It was haphazardly potted for children and was considered disposable. A great piece of early folk art style pottery made for children. Sold as is.
Children's sponge ware or stencil ware of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. The naive stylized Giraffe is simple and striking.
We have also listed a Camel from the same series to mix and match.
