This auction features a RARE MICHAEL HAWLEY , HOPI NAME, CHAKOPTEWA, POTTERY BOWL. IT HAS BEEN RENDERED IN THE SIKYATKI REVIVAL STYLE. IT MEASURES APPROX. 10" ACROSS X 4" TALL X 32". IT WAS RECENTLY ACQUIRED FROM THE OLD SCOTTSDALE ESTATE OF ITS ORIGINAL OWNER, AND IS DATED OCT 15, 1988., ALL SHIPPING CHARGES INCLUDE INSURANCE.
MICHAEL HAWLEY (1948-2012) CHAKOPTEWA, FORMERLY OF SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA, WHO PASSED AWAY IN 2012 WAS THE ONLY LIVING POTTER CREATING TRUE SIKYATKI POLYCHROME POTTERY VESSELS IN THE SAME MANNER AS THEY WERE ORIGINALLY MADE FROM THE 14TH THROUGH THE 17TH CENTURIES. HAWLEY CALLED HIS POTTERY "CHAKOPTEWA POLYCHROME". CHAKOPTEWA WAS HIS ADOPTED HOPI NAME.
MICHAEL HAWLEY USED ONLY HAND GROUND CLAY, DUG UP ON ANTELOPE MESA ON THE HOPI RESERVATION . IT WAS RICH IN MICA FLECKS, WHICH GIVES THE CLAY A BIT OF 'SPARKLE' WHEN HELD TO THE LIGHT-CHECK PICTURES. EACH OF HIS DESIGNS WERE ORIGINAL, AND WITHIIN THE SIKYATKI DESIGN TRADITION.
MICHAEL'S PIECES ARE ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE PIECES OF CONTEMPORARY CERAMIC ART , INSPIRED BY ANCIENT TRADITION. THEY ARE NOT COPIES OR REPLICAS. IT HAS BEEN STATED THAT MICHAEL HAWLEY HAS BEEN GIVEN PERMISSION BY THE HOPI TO MAKE POTTERY USING MATERIALS AND INSPIRATION FROM HOPI.
FROM THE LATE 1970'S THROUGH THE 1980'S, A SERIES OF COMPLETELY SOLD-OUT, ONE-MAN SHOWS OF HIS CERAMICS TOOK PLACE AT THE PROMINENT GALLERY 10 IN SCOTTSDALE , AND THE ELAINE HORWITCH GALLERIES IN BOTH SCOTTSDALE & SANTA FE.
