John Henry was a blue-collar hero. He had bad knees. He was the horse no one wanted. He passed from owner to owner, until Sam Rubin, a man who knew nothing about horses purchased him for ,000. Rubin enlisted trainer, Ron McAnally and John Henry blossomed and set the racing world on its ear with his gutsy, determined performances.
Racing until the incredible age of nine, John Henry claimed 39 wins, including 30 stakes wins and seven Eclipse Awards, and won more than million in earnings. He was voted Horse of the Year twice, and at age 9, was the oldest horse to ever win the title. John Henry was voted Racehorse of the Decade for the 1980s, and was inducted into Racing’s Hall of Fame in 1990.
His last 22 years were spent at the Kentucky Horse Park, where thousands of admirers came from around the globe to honor the legend.
