    Description

    GJPaw
Auctions is pleased to offer a stunning vintage Chinese Ink Stone, together with a beautifully complementary calligraphy brush from China.
The invention and development of China's traditional culture and art are closely related to the "Four Treasures of the Study"
    .
The ink stone, together with the brush, ink stick and paper, are the four writing implements traditionally known as the Four Treasures of the Study (
i.e. writing brush, ink, ink stone, and paper). The use of brush dates back to 4000-5000 years ago in China; ink came into being 3000 years ago; the paper was invented in the Eastern Han Dynasty; and the ink stone was invented in the Spring and Autumn Period.
An ink stone is a stone mortar for the grinding and containment of ink.
A good ink stone is as important as the quality of the ink, as it will affect the quality and texture of the ink that is ground upon it.
Ink stones are made from many types of stone. This superb example is made from a beautifully veined and richly textured
    stone, with
    exquisite grain and color variations
. It measures 5 inches in width by 8.25 inches in depth by 2.1 inches in height (12.7 cm by 20.9 cm by 5.33 cm). Showing wear consistent with use, generally it is in very good condition.
The age of the stone is indeterminate.
The master calligrapher Wang Xi Shi likened calligraphy to a battle when he said: “The sheet of paper, a battleground; the brush, lances and swords; the ink, mind, the commander in chief”.
The brush represents the point where mind, dexterity, and creative ability meet.
Chinese calligraphy brush stalks can be made from either bamboo or other materials such as red sandalwood and glass, or precious materials such as silver and gold. The brush hair is normally from goat, Siberian Weasel, pig, mouse, buffalo, wolf or rabbit.
    This beautiful example
features a gorgeous "organic taste" bamboo wood stalk and animal hair. It measures 15.5 inches in length by 0.5 inches in diameter (39.3 cm by 1.27 cm)
. This superb ink stone and calligraphy brush combination pair would make an exceptionally fine addition to any collection of scholar's or calligraphy objects.
