DESCRIPTION & CONDITION
Up for auction is a lovely, vintage, presumed to be DUAN STONE of China with a hand carved Chinese Azure Dragon motif in a "wadang" roof tile form.
This ink stone was crafted in two pieces with a two toned affect.  The outer sides of the bottom and lid are a reddish/brownish color that appears to be the highly
sought
after
Duan stone
and the interior appears to be grayish/green.
Duan inkstone is ranked first among "the four famous inkstones in China. It got its name from being originally produced in Duanzhou of Zhaoqing.
CONDITION:
This item has been used but is in near perfect condition with the
exception
of the missing
chipped
area on the lids edge, minor scuff marks on the bottom and evidence of ink stains. The break is such a clean, even break that at first glance one would think it belongs there or appears to be a spout. All else is just perfect.
The dragon motif is also known as Seiryu in Japanese, Cheongnyong in Korean and Thanh Long in Vietnamese.
There are no makers marks to properly identify its origin or maker but from its design, stone type and motif, it is a good guess it is Chinese made. The make period is also unknown but from it's design and construction, I'm guessing 1960's-'70s. You be the judge.
This dragon motif was found on a Han Dynasty era stone coffin depicting the Azure Dragon Qing Long (Ch'ing Lung), c.205 BC – 220 AD. Haikang (Hai-K'ang) area.
This dragon is one of the four symbols of the Chinese constellations, which are the astral representations of the Wufang Shangdi.
The Azure Dragon represents the east and the spring season. The Chinese dragon is considered as one of the foremost auspicious symbols of power, good luck, good fortune, abundance and prosperity, attainment of great success, protection from unfavorable spirits and events in life, wisdom and courage, loyalty, strong self esteem, happy marriage and lasting love.

the Azure Dragon is commonly found as the dragon of choice on "Wadang" a particular roof tile in many homes and temples.
